A Vintage Mixed Media Altered Box

Hi Everyone, Saadia here!

Today, I want to share with you an altered box. I used Little Birdie’s recently launched colors of Chalk Paints. The chalk paints are fast drying matte acrylic paints. They can be used on home decor projects, furniture, canvas , paper and even very slick surfaces. They give beautiful coverage even with one coat and the color range is just amazing.

I hope you like my project.

Lets start:

I covered the box with Little Birdie’s white Gesso. This gesso is bright white and gives good coverage with a single coat. Chalk paints can be applied directly to the surface but I wanted to apply different mediums and texture products before coloring the box that’s why I primed it with gesso first.

Next, I covered the box with pieces of book paper with Soft Gel Medium. I just wanted little areas of text to be visible after the final layer of paint. I sealed it with Soft Gel Medium.

After that, I applied Grainy Texture Paste through a stencil on the lid of the box.

Then I picked  3 colors of Chalk Paints and started coloring the box. I wanted a very loose look with paint drips and splatters. I slightly diluted the chalk paints with Soft Gel Medium and then aided the drips with little bit of water spray. It looked ugly at this stage but it improved after few more layers of chalk paints.

Next, I glued all the beautiful Little Birdie flowers and newly launched primed chipboard shapes. These chipboard shapes are already primed and don’t need a coat of gesso.

I colored the flowers with Color Splash sprays. Little Birdie flowers are very sturdy and take the different mediums, colors and sprays well. They don’t get mushy with wet mediums.

Next, I applied Little Birdie Crystal Drops, Mixed Media Stones and seed beads from my stash with Soft Gel Medium.

Thereafter, I added a little bit of Ocean Mist and Grape Crush Color Splash sprays in the depths of the composition.

Lastly, I sealed the painted areas with Soft Gel Medium Matte. Varnish can be used for sealing the project but I am comfortable with the gel medium.I hope you liked my project .Take care and don’t forget to take part in this month’s blog challenge. Waiting to see your projects!
