Crafter in the Spotlight

Hello arty crafty folks,

It feels so good to hear the story of one of our talented friends every Thursday and I am sure you will agree to that. You must be wondering who’s here today with us at ‘Crafter in the Spotlight’. Well! It’s Amisha Shah from Kolkata who has made Bangalore her home for past ten years.

Amisha’s art and craft journey began in her childhood when she started attending painting classes. Apart from that she had a unique talent of making water fountains. However, busy life kept her away from crafting for a while but she renewed her crafting passion once again, learning new styles from friends and renowned crafters.

How did Amisha get into crafting, what inspires her, what are her tips for fellow crafters, her favourite quote, how would she contribute to the crafting world if she had magical powers? Rashmi Closepet M.D Itsy Bitsy: Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?

Amisha Shah: Hello lovely People, I am Amisha. To begin with, I am from Kolkata but residing in Bangalore for past 10 years. I have done MBA in HR and was working with a reputed consultancy firm in Bangalore. I love listening to music, am a big time foodie and a crazy and passionate crafter.

RC: How did you get into crafting?

AS: I was inclined towards art and craft since my childhood. My mother sent me for drawing classes and that’s how it all started. During my school days I use to make paintings and water fountains. One of my water fountain creations is still on display in one of the famous eatery places in Kolkata. I had to quit my job because of some health issues and got in touch with one of my then neighbours who is also a famous crafter and that’s how my crafting journey re-started. I learnt Decoupage from another well known crafter and since then it’s been a non-stop ride for me.

RC: What is your favourite type of craft?

AS: At the moment Decoupage. I am also inclined towards learning glass cutting which is my next goal.

RC: What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?

AS: The list is long! Chalk Paints, Decoupage Papers, Little Birdie Decoupage Glue, Little Birdie Handmade Flowers…..

RC: If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the Crafting world?

AS: I would create a magic spell and spread it across the globe to artists all around the world… which would clear all the mess made while crafting. It’s a really annoying job to clear the mess after you are done with your crafting!!

RC: Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy?

AS:  Hands down… Chalk Paints.

RC: How would you describe your style of crafting?

AS: Bold, Creative and Neat.

RC: How do you organize your time for crafting?

AS: Whenever I get free from my household chores. However, even when I am not crafting, thoughts run in mind about how to improve the current project or what should be my next project.

RC: Tips for people who want to craft.

AS: Listen to your heart and just go for it, no one is perfect. There is a saying that goes…. “Every artist was first an amateur” and “Every amateur is an artist”.

RC: Your all -time favourite quote?

AS: Just Go with the Flow.

Material Used for making this Project

Tip: To begin with, sand the organizer with sandpaper. Always sand your base be it glass or MDF, before you start working on them.

Step 1:

I painted the inside of the organizer and the sides of it with grey acrylic paint and  painted the edges or rim of the organizer with blue acrylic paint. Then I let it dry completely.

Step 2:

As  I was going for an ethnic look, I chose the stencil accordingly. Applied blue acrylic paint on the selected design of the stencil with a dauber on the painted sides of the organizer.

 

Step 3:

Then with the help of the Little Birdie’s Decoupage glue, adhered the ethnic decoupage paper from Itsy Bitsy on the sides and scraped the excess paper using sandpaper. Later sealed the adhered paper with decoupage glue.

Step 4:

Distressed the sides of the organiser with blue archival ink and later applied two coats of varnish. To give a little extra oomph, applied stick-on pearls on the stenciled area.

And voila!! It was done. Once done, it can be used as a Cutlery Caddy or as a Stationery Holder.
