Crafter in the Spotlight

The ‘Crafter in the Spotlight’ is so in tune with my Thursday routine that I feel something’s out of sync till the time I bring you the story of a talented crafter on this day every week. So let’s see who is here today to share her story. It’s Roopashree from Karnataka’s city of palaces. You guessed it right! She is from Mysore.

Roopashree is passionate about crafting and feels it’s inherited.  She likes exploring and experimenting whenever she sees any new style. She finds the calmness of night a great time to craft and is a perfectionist when it comes to crafting endeavours!

How did Roopashree get into crafting, what inspires her, what are her tips for fellow crafters, her favourite quote, how would she contribute to the crafting world if she had magical powers? Read answers to all these questions, discover more about her interesting journey and catch a glimpse of a step by step project by Roopashree in this interview. Don’t forget to leave your comments for her.

Let’s see how Roopashree feels about being featured in ‘Crafter in the Spotlight’ this week!

Hello friends! I am very delighted and feel immense pleasure to be featured in “Crafter in the Spotlight”. It has added a feather to my cap. Thanks a bunch to Itsy Bitsy for appreciating and encouraging my work as always.

Rashmi Closepet, MD, Itsy Bitsy: Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?

Roopashree: I am Roopashree from the wonderful city of Mysore also known as “the city of palaces” and the cultural capital of Karnataka. My city has so many palaces, historical monuments and has always been the land that promoted art and culture…so now you can guess why I am so passionate about art & craft. That’s how I ended up choosing my profession which included creativity & imagination.

I am an Architect by profession and a passionate Crafter.

Currently, I am settled in Chennai, a city which has a completely opposite atmosphere compared to my hometown. But my better half always supported and encouraged my profession as well as my passion.

RC: How did you get into crafting?

RS: Well I can say it’s inherited. My mom was into art and craft and that’s how I developed my passion, observing and helping her ever since my childhood. Even now I send my creations first for her feedback. She is my mentor and critic.

RC: What is your favourite type of craft?

RS: I am a person who likes exploring and experimenting. I also try my hands on all types of crafts… so nothing specific. I can recreate any piece of art just by observing it, maybe it’s a special gift and I’m thankful for it.

RC: What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?

RS: Itsy Bitsy plays a very vital role in my craft life. None of my art pieces are complete without Itsy Bitsy products. It is thus quite difficult to choose only one favourite from the wide range of collections. Still, if I had to choose … it would be vibrant handmade flowers, chippies, Chalk paints, sprays, pattern papers…just love those!! And also all products related to mixed media, 3D stickers, stencils & the list goes on.

Must say, Itsy Bitsy really has a wide….wide… range of products to offer and fulfills all types of crafting needs.

RC: If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the Crafting world?

RS:  Ooh.. I really wish I had some magical powers!! I would spell the magic words and get a craft room which is fully equipped and filled with craft supplies. For sure… having your own craft space will be the dream of all Crafters!!

RC: Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy?

RS: Hmm… A tough question!

Well, my first Mixed Media art was chosen in top 3 entries in March blog challenge which encouraged me and supported my art, so all the mixed media supplies from Itsy Bitsy are a prized possession in my stash.

RC: How would you describe your style of crafting?

RS: My style of crafting! As I said earlier I like exploring new art forms, so whenever I start any project, I gather the required essentials first, then visualise each step. It might be the composition or colour combos which give me an idea about how to proceed further and I‘m very much particular about the finishing and perfection. I never compromise on that!!

RC: How do you organize your time for crafting?

RS: I’m a night owl 🙂 Actually, all my imagination arouses and invigorates at night. So I usually spend time working late nights. May be because of the calmness and there is nothing to interrupt the thoughts and the work.

RC: Tips for people who want to craft?

RS: Crafting is a wonderful passion. It’s a stress buster. Don’t stick to one, craft world is very vast keep exploring and experimenting new art forms.

RC: Your all -time favourite quote?

RS: “Use your smile to change the world; don’t let the world change your smile”.

Here is a gorgeous project by  Roopashree & step by step procedure:

Materials from itsybitsy:-

Mont marte box canvas, Mont marte white gesso, silicon glue, Texture paste, Natural sea shells, Color splash, alcohol spray, chipboard Angle wings & Silicon mould.

Step 1. Apply a coat of white gesso all over the Canvas, dry it & stencil it using texture paste.have used stencil from my stash. You can use any design related to love theme.

Step 2. Compose all the Embellishments like Angle wings chipboard, clay heart, sea shells, metal embellishment, beads, plastic flowers & clay flowers, as shown in the image to form a cluster.

Step 3. Apply a coat of White gesso on top again which acts as a primer to hold the colors intact.

Step 4. Divide the composition into 3 parts diagonally as I have chosen 3 Colors (Golden carnery, purple haze & wild rose alcohol spray) spray randomly & wipe excess if any, dry thoroughly.

Step 5. Add a dry stroke of gold paint on top which highlights the elements & gives a rich look.

Step 6. Have added some stones from my stash which gives some sparkle effects.

Here are a couple of  Roopashree’s other awesome creations:
