Rashmi Closepet M.D Itsy Bitsy: Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?

Priya Mishra: Hi All! I am Priyadarshini Mishra. I hail from Odisha, the state running along the eastern coast of India, with beautiful beaches and awesome handicrafts. Post marriage, I moved to Mumbai and I currently live in Thane with my husband and my six-year-old son. I have done my Masters in Life Science and MBA in Human Resources. Besides crafting, I love to read, travel, and write poems.

RC: How did you get into crafting?

PM: According to the trend those days, all bright students were expected to study science and so did I!! But today, when I look back, I deeply regret not studying Arts. That is the one thing I wanted to do the most! I could never enroll for art and craft classes too because of my father’s transferrable job. However, ‘whatever happens, happens for the best’. I came across paper Quilling while searching for something on the web and instantly fell in love with it. I started mixed media just about a year back but I think it’s simply wonderful.

RC: What is your favourite type of craft?

PM: I love Paper crafts and Altered art. I am enjoying Mixed Media a lot these days.

RC: What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?

PM: Itsy Bitsy has recently launched a variety of products which are so tempting. I love the flowers the most. In India, Little Birdie is only brand that provides a huge range of handmade flowers at such affordable prices. I also love the 2 in 1 Texture Paste, Grainy Texture Paste, Chalk Paints and Chipboards. The newly launched Paper Pack- Vintage Reflections carries such a beautiful compilation…. everyone should try these products!!

RC: If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the Crafting world?

PM: I would like to give a revenue generating platform to talented crafters, so that it could become their fulltime profession. I would love to spread awareness among public about crafting and these passionate crafters.

RC: Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy?

PM: Little Birdie Flowers and Chalk Paints.

RC: How would you describe your style of crafting?

PM: I would say experimental. I don’t follow a formula; there is no formula.

RC: How do you organise your time for crafting?

PM: I generally craft late in the night.

RC: Tips for people who want to craft

PM: Don’t overthink. Just follow your heart when you are crafting and never give any of your art work for free.

RC: Your all -time favourite quote?

PM: “A Champion is someone who gets up when he can’t” – Jack Dempsey

Here is a step-by-step project by  Priya

Mixed Media Canvas

Step 1:
I took a stretched canvas for this project and gave it a coat
of Mont marte white Gesso all over.
Step 2:
After the gesso dried completely, for which I used my Little
Birdie heat tool, I created some texture using Little Birdie 2 in 1 Mixed Media
paste, stencil and a spatula. I just love this Mixed Media Paste. It dries so
quickly and is very smooth.

Step 3:
Then I arranged some negative chipboard on the area I wanted
to create a lot of textures and stuck them with Little Birdie Soft Matt Gel medium. This is a beautiful product to stick all your embellishments on a project. Really smooth and quick to dry. Then I arranged some more chipboard cutouts to create more texture on the project. Then I used some gear chipboards on them and arranged the way I wanted on my final project. I gave a coat of black gesso after each layer. It is important so that no blank space is left in between the layers.
Step 4:
Thereafter,  I also applied a coat of gesso on the wings chipboard
from Itsy Bitsy and the resin frame. On the cute little glass bottle, I sprinkled some sparkle and put a small key inside it. These will be my topmost and final layer in the project.  At places I also glued some metal brads. After gluing the resin frame on the canvas I started coloring.

Step 5:

Initially I wanted to use turquoise blue, copper and gold metallic paints but as I progressed, I also added blue and purple metallic paints to the project. I started with turquoise blue and added a bit of mist to let the color penetrate to the bottom layer also. For rest of the project, I only did dry brushing. This is how the final project looks!! Hope you like it.
