Happy Diwali – Tri fold Money Envelope

Hey guys

How are you all? I am sure you all must be all enthusiastic about the upcoming Diwali festival…..which is something even I look forward to. As a kid I remember, Diwali was all about beautiful dresses, rangoli with my sisters (back then I was only allowed to watch), firecrackers, Faraal (Sweet and savory eatables) and of course Diwali money envelopes given by elders on Laxmi Pooja Day….such fond memories. I am sure you all must be associating some of these things with your memories. As an adult now, its a more fun because I am the one making faraal, making rangolis, doing Laxmi Pooja in my new saree and of course giving away Diwali shagun envelopes. So keeping those fond memories alive, I have made a Diwali Shagun Envelope which is very easy to do and looks elegant when you gift it. I have a pictorial tutorial and I will explain the step by step procedure. Lets begin…

  1. To make this, I started with a white cardstock measuring 10.75″x 7″. you can use any color you want, but I used white.
  2. On the longer side, score at 3.5″ and then 7.5″. What it will do is, divide the sheet into 3 parts to create the three fold envelope. The 3 parts will measure 3.5″x 7″, 4″ by 7″ and 3.25″x 7″.
  3. Now, we can add our papers. I have used L’amour paper pack…I love the prints and they are very subtle. To make this envelope, one sheet is used, I used the pink floral paper and cut it in such a way that it covers all the parts I want. I have used a  green cardstock to mat my pattern paper. Now, the idea is to leave the center part plain so we can write the sender and receiver’s names on it. I also added a little border to decorate it. On the outside, I added satin ribbon for envelope closure.  The upper part is left plain so that we can decorate on it, as it will be the face of the envelope.
  4. To hold the money inside, I made a little pocket using the borders from the same paper pack. Fussy cut it out and then matted it on green cardstock. I added this pocket to the lower part of the envelope on the inside.
  5. Now, once everything is covered with pattern paper, then comes the decoration part. I heat embossed a chipboard embellishment using the newly launched ItsyBitsy gold embossing powder. This is a good option if you want to do solid shapes with multiple layers. I usually emboss 3 times and this gives a very good coverage and the gold is not very bright …just the right shine.
  6. Then, I got all my flowers out and started building the arrangement. I realized at this stage that it was looking very plain….so I added a pattern paper to the front and then glued the same arrangement onto it. I used silicon glue and white adhesive from the store. Please check the new glue range…they are really awesome. I added a little muslin cloth and few  die cut leaves from my stash.
  7. Since its a Diwali envelope, I thought we needed a lot of sparkle and shine. So I added some clear glitter and gold sequins. The sparkle dust that I I added is so fine and delicate that you can see it only in real…. its so pretty.
  8. The Happy Diwali sentiment is stamped and heat embossed in gold using a stamp that was lying with me. you can even write it with a gold pen or any other pen.
