Mixed Media Layout – Sunshine

Hello guys,

This is DT Mukta here, back with a mixed media layout for you all.  I have a pictorial tutorial to show you how I made this from the scratch using Little Birdie’s Embossing Texture Paste.  My layout is a representation of my 2 favorite seasons….summer and fall and it is mainly because of the beautiful colors which the nature offers us during these seasons. This layout is summery with many flowers and butterflies and has a touch of fall colors…..yellow, orange and red. I get these weird  thoughts in my mind and sometimes I give in and try to create my though.

Thick heat Embossing Texture Paste is perfect for adding textures and dimensions to projects. These pastes can be applied to various surfaces including paper, metal, wood, glass, ceramic, fabric and more (heat embossing needs careful handling when used on fabric or flammable surfaces). Though it looks glossy when applied…it dries matte. You can apply these with a palette knife or a hard brush. This is water resistant when dry but not washable. These give really fun effect to your projects…..and an extra layer of texture. To know about the embossing pastes, please scan the QR code .

Back to our project… I have a video format for the same tutorial as well as a step by step tutorial here. For the video tutorial…please click the link below

Lets begin the step by step tutorial here……

  • I started with a fleece white 12″ by 12″ cardstock which I have used as the base for my layout.
  • I covered the entire paper with white gesso to protect my paper.
  • Then I took my favorite Color Splash sprays in 2 colors – Paprika and Tangerine and created a light background. I dried it thoroughly with my heat tool and again layered the colors.
  • Then I took 3 shades of the Embossing Texture Pastes – Frosty Fizz, Pineapple Swirl and Raspberry Cooler and mixed a small amount of each with 2 in 1 Modelling Paste. I did this because, the mixture gives a more controlled bubbling than if I used the paste alone.  So I mixed the colors to get a lemon yellow, coral orange and a white paste.

I applied these on my layout using this fun geometric pattern stencil to create this beautiful background for my layout. Loved how the colors mix with each other to give this variation in colors.

Then I took some of my chipboard shapes and embossed them in gold and few in black.

I chose my picture and layered it with some scraps of papers lying in my stash.

I added some random stamping using the script stamp and dot stamp and black archival inks. I also muted the background in few places using white gesso. Then I started to build my composition using these frames and flowers. I have used heavy gel medium and craft glue as an adhesive.

Once I was happy with my background, I started to add the finishing details. I added a few pebbles, glitter, sequins, black splatters and gold flat pearls. I also dry brushed with gesso to bring everything together. The final touches came from my sentiment and 3 butterflies. Here are some pictures and closeups of my project.
