A Vintage Love Story – Shabby Chic Decoupage Box

Hello everyone, Mukta here!

How are you all today? Hope the sun is not too harsh at your end……Its very hot here in Mumbai….That’s why I am indoors crafting with a cool glass of lemonade.  I am sharing my new project with you all today which is my first attempt at decoupage. I honestly have never tried my hand at decoupage…it is something that I am afraid of….Seriously!!! Its decoupage all this month here at ItsyBitsy and I thought this is the perfect time to try my hand at this beautiful art and here we go…….

So, I made a very simple decoupage box in the style that I am most comfortable with….SHABBY CHIC. So I combined all this together and made a Shabby Box with a Vintage feel to it……I seriously am in love with it!  Here a simple tutorial so you all can try to make something like this if it interests you….

  1. I started with a MDF box which was lying with me since months……I kept ignoring it till this day…..finally put it to good use.
  2. I cleaned it nicely and then unscrewed the hinges and the latch. Then I gave it 2 coats of white gesso. You can also use white chalk paint which also works perfectly. I dried it all thoroughly to start the next step.
  3. The next step was choosing my papers and colors….after an hour I decided to use the new Little Birdie decoupage papers and chalk paints in matching shades from the store along with Decoupage glue and Varnish (matte) and Crackle Medium. This is the most important step as you will have to decide now if you wish to add the crackle effect in your project and if so, what will be the base coat and the top coat. Its important to choose contrasting colors so the cracks will be properly visible. Make sure the shades you use are matching the paper you have chosen.
  4. Now, I gave the exterior of the box a good coat of Wild Moss Chalk Paint. I added it on the top and bottom of the box. I let it dry and then added Crackle Medium to it. Now, While adding this, I made sure to leave the center part of the box as I did not wish any crackle there. Also the thickness of the medium decides the size of the cracks…for larger cracks apply thick coat while thin application will give you smaller cracks.
  5. As soon as the Crackle Medium dried, I came back with Pink Ballet Chalk Paint and painted the entire box on the inside as well as outside. Here, it is very important to move the brush in only one direction and not overlap the strokes on the areas where the crackle medium is applied or the cracks will get ruined.
  6. I dried it all and then applied the decoupage paper using decoupage glue from the store. This was by far the simplest step….I gave it 2 coats of the glue making sure it dried between the coats. To add a vintage feel to this box, I added Archival Ink – Sepia to the box edges…..I was so happy to see it and I sealed it all with 3 coats of varnish making sure to dry between layers.
  7. Now was the time to add shabby chic elements to my box…….I added Sisal Fiber, a gold embossed chipboard frame, flowers and a heat embossed chipboard sentiment using Silicon Glue. That finished my box……I hope you all like it.

You can try it too and if you have any questions feel free to ask me!

Happy crafting…..
