Welcome – Medley with Mandala and Watercolour Embellishments

Hello friends,

Warm welcome to all the readers from  DT member Vaishali. Today I am sharing an interesting medley of some wonderful new products, that are a part of my DT kit for this month.

In the picture above are some of the products from my kit, that I have crafted with to make a WELCOME BOARD. Have also used the beautiful Mandala stencil with different mediums, in different ways on different surfaces. So let’s get started to know it all.

Step wise procedure to make the Welcome Board-

I have  used a circular MDF piece (12 inch in diameter ) as the base and decided to give it a  distressed look using chalk paints and wax distress technique. Chalk paints are matte in nature and work excellent for this technique. This simple and quick technique works on the basic principle that wax resist the paint applied over it. Here, I have chosen my overall colour as teal and wanted pink and brown to be seen through it in certain areas giving it a worn out look.

First step was to give the circular MDF piece a coat of chalk paint – Misty Rose.  Once the paint dried completely,  I gave some vertical strokes of chalk paint Chocolate Truffle, randomly. Let it dry as well.  This was followed by rubbing candle wax on the edges and randomly at places where I wanted the pink and brown to be seen through the top teal paint. Here’s the picture of the steps.

Next, Iapplied chalk paint Tuscan Teal all over and let it dry completely. Once dry, you can faintly see where wax is applied.

Now, I used a medium density sand paper ( easily available in any local paint shop ) and rubbed over the entire surface. The wax below is resisting the top teal paint and as a result, the adhering of top paint  is not strong in those areas, where wax was applied. So the teal will come off easily from those areas on sanding. The base colours pink and brown peek, giving a  lovely worn out look.

This was followed by drawing wood lines using thin round brush. Have also done dry brushing with chalk paint Sailing Sky at few spots for further distressed effect.

Was very happy with the distressed look in these beautiful colours and the excitement continued as it was time to use the huge 14 x 14 inch Mandala decor stencil. Have explored this stencil in different ways. Do read till the end and be a part of my explorations.

Many more elements were to be added to the board and did not want the distressed look to be covered by the stencil completely. So I used the mandala stencil partially and stenciled using modelling paste, mixed with chalk paint – Butternut Squash. The colour compliments teal very well. Did so using a palette knife. Have a look….

The Mandala looks beautiful and now was the time to strike its medley with watercolour embellishments. The recently launched watercolour embellishments come in huge variety from sets having cute fussy cut images, panels, paper packs, flowers, frames, envelopes,  banners, borders, bricks, tags, paper words and much more. Do check them out. Do not miss working on them and playing along the current month blog challenge where anything goes with watercolour embellishments.

For this creation, I chose to use watercolour paper flowers Carly and decor paper word  – Welcome (a wonderful 12 inch length cut out ) that comes with a stiff backing. To add colours to these elements, have used Ranger Distress Inks. Distress inks are water based, they react with water and can be blended with each other. Being transparent, they give a lovely water colour effect. Dabbed some inks on the craft mat and spritz water on it .

Now just moved the welcome cut out and the flowers over this spread of colours to get the  blended effect of colours on them.

They have to be moved gently face down. Have used colours that would work well with the distressed background.

Am still in the  Holi mood- and loving to play with colours!!! The watercolour embellishments are made of high quality, cold pressed 100% cotton  paper that has great absorbenc. They can take the required water (wetness ) without damage and wrapping,  helps the colours blend easily, can be used with different mediums like sprays, inks, metallic paints etc. They are a treat to work with, very versatile, with immense possibilities.

Next adhered this coloured ‘Welcome’ on the board, off centered with my favorite silicon glue from the store.  This composition also helped me cover the drilled hole. Had got this done as my initial plan was to make a wall clock.

Have also done some splatting with white gesso, more in the lower area below the welcome. Decoupaged pieces of napkins from my stash that had some tiny  flowers, butterflies and bird, using Little Birdie Deco Magic decoupage glue. Gave stitch lines with black permanent marker.

Made a floral arrangement using water colour paper flowers, coloured with distress inks. Also added some handmade paper flowers from the store. Have given the arrangement a base of lace and sisal fiber for a shabby touch.  Did you notice that have used 3D Pearl Drops !!!

Sprinkled glitter over the welcome cut out and floral arrangement. Did so when the applied decor varnish was still wet. Have also used some chipboard shapes and adhered black beads with soft gel medium matte to fill the gaps.

Here’s the final look. Hope you liked my Welcome medley with mandala and watercolour elements.

Will be exploring the watercolour embellishments, in the next post as well. For now let me quickly  take you though my creations using the mandala stencil. The mandala decor stencils are huge, overall 14 x 14 inch (mandala – 12 x 12 inch ),  available in 4 beautiful designs. They can be used to design various decor products like wall pieces, lamp shades, clocks, cushion covers, on furniture and so on. However, it is not necessary to use the stencil as a whole. There are smaller elements within the design that can be used on smaller surfaces as well, making the product versatile. Have used the stencil design – Glamour Bloom.

Stenciling with Chalk Paints on Fabric-

Here, I  have used chalk paints Rainy Day and Deep Sea Blue to  decorate a cushion cover in a jiffy!!! The key to perfect stenciling with paints is – using a stencil brush, no added water and loading  just enough paint on the brush.  To get a shaded look, take the desired colours side by side on palette and  keep dabbing the stencil brush on both the colours, (no set proportion ) each time you stencil. This will give natural tones. Have a look at the cushion cover with dual colour stenciling effect and full mandala design.

Stenciling with Sparkle Paste on Burlap  journal cover-

The mix media journal from the store comes with burlap cover. Painted the cover first with chalk paint Passionate Plum, followed by Colour Splash Gold Rush. Rubbed tinted metallic paint Golden Glaze, randomly and on the edges, to highlight the burlap texture. The surface was now ready for stenciling.

As the journal cover was small in size, used only the central flower element of the stencil. This time stenciled with sparkle Paste Silver Sage with a palette knife. The Little Birdie Sparkle Paste gave the desired mild sparkle to the cover.

Used the recently launched 3D Pearl Drops for added dimension. The Pearl Drops compliment the mandala design beautifully. Also used the 3d Pearl Drop over the chipboard shape to get an embossed effect. Distressed the edges with chalk paint Charcoal to add depth. Here’s the final look after all the embellishments- ribbon, chipboard shape, foil sentiment, mini flowers and metal charm.

Tips-

  1. Use the 3d Pearl Drops upright to get good results. This also avoids air bubbles.
  2. The 3d Pearl Drops and Sparkle Paste, both react and mix with any water based inks or sprays. As a result they throw the mixed colour. You can see that in my creation. The actual colour has changed. So if you wish to maintain the actual colour of Pearl Drop or Sparkle Paste, avoid water based inks or sprays on the base over which they are to be applied.
  3. Once the 3d Pearl Drops dry, they can be peeled out and used as embellishments in any project.

‘Create your own Magic !!!’ , says my journal cover….

Stenciling with Embossing Texture Paste on Paper Envelopes-

This is a great way to make wonderful  envelopes in minutes. Have used parts of mandala stencil with embossing texture paste. (Emerald Isle on white and Frosty Fizz on plum coloured envelope). Apply the paste through the stencil with palette knife. Do not let it dry naturally. Instead go over it with heat tool to get a puffed embossed look. The embossing paste dries instantly,  with the embossed effect. The colour of paste turns lighter than actual on heat embossing.

Have further embellished with 3D Pearl Drops (Lemon drop and Gray sky ) and white half pearls. Outlined with permanent marker.

Stenciling with Modelling Paste on Wooden surface-

Have mentioned about it in the Welcome board. The white modelling paste can be mixed with colour of once choice before stenciling. You can colour over it as well with different colouring mediums after it dries.

These were my creations using mandala stencil and water colour embellishments. Thank you for being along with me through this long, picture heavy post.

Happy crafting. Looking forward to your wonderful creations.

Create, Express, Enjoy !!!
